JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Wake Forest men's golf team opened the 2011 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges with a round of 16-over 304 and are in ninth place in the 15-team field.

All-Americans Lee Bedford and Evan Beck led the team on Friday with opening round 75s. The duo is in a tie for 23rd heading into Saturday's second round.

"It was more of the same thing today," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We just didn't score on the holes we needed to, leaving a couple of up-and-downs out there and we had a couple of three putts. It's almost like we're one good round away from breaking loose. We haven't had it yet but we're close. I love this team and I know it will happen soon."

Bedford countered six bogeys with a trio of birdies for his 75 while Beck was a little more consistent, making 13 pars and one birdie. Bedford had a solid finish as he was 5-over for the day through 13 holes. He made three-straight pars before closing out the round with back-to-back birdies.

Junior Charlie Harrison and sophomore Thomas Birdsey both opened with rounds of 5-over 77. Harrison made three birdies on his opening nine to go out in 1-over 37 but made a pair of double-bogeys on the second nine to finish at 5-over. Birdsey played pretty well most of the day and was just two over with four holes to play but a tough finish left him with a 77. Both players will start the second round tied for 41st.

Freshman Cyrus Stewart, who is making his Demon Deacon debut this week, also had a solid round going for most of the day. He made 12 pars and just one bogey in the first 13 holes but like Birdsey, he would drop a few shots coming home and finished with an opening round 79.

Fellow freshman Brandon Ng also fired a 79 on Friday. Ng, who is playing as an individual, had a rocky start as he was 6-over through eight holes. But the Canada native made a birdie at the par-4 18th and would play the final 10 holes at just 1-over par. Ng and Stewart will start Saturday in a tie for 55th.

NC State got a round of 4-under 68 from Mark McMillen and the Wolfpack hold the opening round lead after 287. State has an 8-shot lead on fellow ACC-foe Virginia. McMillen was one of just four players to break par on Friday and leads the individual race by two shots.

The Demon Deacons are paired with Louisville and Kent State for the second round and will begin at 10:10 a.m. EST. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
