KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team was not able to take down an SEC foe for the second week in a row, falling 6-1 to No. 2 Tennessee in Knoxville Sunday.
The No. 35 Deacons fall to 3-4 on the season, with all four losses coming on the road, while the Volunteers improve to 10-1.
Zach Leslie got Wake Forest's only point of the day at No. 6, taking down Taylor Patrick 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (8).
The Vols took the doubles point for the 23rd time in their last 24 matches, sweeping all three positions. Wake came closest to a doubles win on court 2, where Jonathan Wolff and Danny Kreyman dropped an 8-7 heartbreaker to Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren, falling 9-7 in the tiebreak.
Edwards Jones got past Adam Lee at No. 5 and Tennys Sandgren won the last eight games of the match to defeat No. 67 Wolff 6-3, 6-0. Top-ranked Williams clinched the match for the Vols on Court 2, getting past Danny Kreyman 6-3, 6-4.
Boris Conkic got Tennessee's fifth point at No. 4. At the top position, No. 123 Tripper Carleton took an easy 6-2 first set against No. 17 John-Patrick Smith, but was shutout in the second set and lost the match tiebreak to fall 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (4).
The players from Wake Forest and Tennessee who were not scheduled to play in the dual match lineup, played two rounds of singles matches on Saturday and Sunday that did not count towards the dual match but did count toward individual records in a series called the Wake-Tennessee Challenge.
The two teams split the eight total matches 4-4. Conner Sherwood was the only Demon Deacon to win twice, defeating Patrick 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday before taking down Jarryd Chaplin 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 this morning. David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar also won for the Deacs Sunday with Hopkins taking down Patrick 6-2, 6-1 and Prabhakar defeating Colton Norton 6-1, 6-2.
