WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's golf team continues its spring schedule this weekend as it heads to a familiar tournament, The Hootie At Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C.
The 54-hole event, which is being played at the beautiful Bulls Bay County Club, will begin on Sunday, March 27, and end on Tuesday, March 29. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of all three rounds.
This is the seventh playing of the event and the Demon Deacons have competed in each of the first six tournaments. Wake won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007 and finishing second last year. Defending champion LSU is back in the field again this season along with No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Augusta State, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 11 Auburn. The Demon Deacons come into this year's event ranked No. 31 in the latest Golfstat standings.
Head coach Jerry Haas' lineup this weekend will feature senior Justin Bryant, junior Lee Bedford, sophomores Evan Beck and Charlie Harrison as well as with freshman Beau Cutts.
Beck and Bedford have been the team's two most consistent players so far this season, topping the team with 72.1 and 72.2 scoring averages, respectively. Each player has also notched seven top-20 finishes on year.
Bedford has some good vibes with Bulls Bay as he fired an 8-under 63 in the final round of The Hootie last season, which propelled him to a runner-up finish. The 63 was tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in school-history.
After a slow start in last year's Hootie, Beck made a total of seven birdies in the final 36 holes to card rounds of 72-71 and finish tied for 37th. For Bryant, Harrison and Cutts, this week will be their first appearances at The Hootie.
The Demon Deacons will be in the first grouping off the front nine at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. Wake is paired with No. 12 LSU and No. 3 Florida. There is a chance of rain on Sunday in the Awendaw, S.C., area but the forecast for Monday and Tuesday look to be ideal for golf.
