CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and Wake Forest was never able to recover, as the Chanticleers defeated the Demon Deacons 10-2 Wednesday afternoon at Vrooman Field at Charles Watson Stadium.
Wake Forest has now lost four straight and falls to 4-8 on the season, while Coastal Carolina extends its winning streak to five in a row and sits at 9-4.
Sophomore Justin Van Grouw takes the loss for Wake Forest and is now 1-2. Josh Conway had a no-hitter through the first four innings and picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the season.
Freshman James Harris recorded two of Wake Forest's three hits on the night, going 2-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Mac Williamson collected the Deacs' only other hit of the game and has now hit safely in four straight games.
The Chanticleers scored the first eight runs of the game, including six in the top of the first. Coastal Carolina began the game with four straight walks, a hit batter and another walk to plate two runs before the Deacs could get an out.
Wake Forest walked six batters in the first, hit a batter and committed an error to allow Coastal to gain its advantage. The Chanticleers also scored one run in both the second and third innings.
The Demon Deacons stopped the shutout bid in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Pat Blair and senior Ryan Lloyd led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After Steven Brooks was retired, a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position and sophomore Matt Conway brought home a run with a ground out to the shortstop.
Wake Forest's only other run came in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, Williamson singled to left center to begin the rally. Freshman Zane Yanzick popped up to the right fielder, but the ball was dropped, as Williamson ended up on third and Yanzick on second. Williamson would then score on a wild pitch before Coastal could make the last out of the inning.
The Deacs used 10 pitchers during the game, while freshman Nate Jones, junior Zach White, senior Mark Adzick and freshman Chris Willson all held Coastal scoreless during their outings.
Wake Forest will return to the diamond this weekend when they host a three-game series with North Carolina at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park to open up ACC play.
