Decathlon Deacs Shine on Opening Day of Combined Events

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's track and field team kicked off their final home meet of the year, the Deacon Combined Events Classic, as Alex Hill and Trey Blanton competed together in the decathlon.
Hill got off to a great start in the first five events and is currently in seventh place with a total of 3,549 points, while Blanton holds the 19th position with 2,249 points after only competing in four of the five events. Assistant coach Chris Helwick also entered the competition as an unattached runner and is in fourth place with 3,767 points. The leader, Eric Broadbent, ended the first day of action with 4,254 points.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of all the action from the opening day of the Deacon Combined Events Classic.
100m Dash (Event 1 of 10)
Junior Alex Hill paced the Deacon duo with a sixth-place finish in 11.28, while redshirt sophomore Trey Blanton finished 21st after crossing the line in 12.15. Chris Helwick also competed, placing ninth overall with a time of 11.40.
Long Jump (Event 2 of 10)
Alex Hill again led the Deacs after clearing a distance of 22-3 (6.78m), a new personal-best mark in the event, to finish in sixth position. Trey Blanton had a jump of 19-2.75 (5.86m) to place 17th overall. Chris Helwick had an excellent mark of 22-4.25 (6.81m) to grab fifth place.
Shot Put (Event 3 of 10)
Alex Hill and Trey Blanton turned in nearly identical throws in the shot put. Hill's mark of 38-9.5 (11.82m) gave him 11th place, while Blanton's toss of 37-1.25 (11.31m) earned the 13th position. Chris Helwick claimed a fourth-place finish with a throw of 42-6.25 (12.96m).
High Jump (Event 4 of 10)
Both Alex Hill and Trey Blanton had solid heights in the second jumping event of the day. Hill reached a height of 5-9.75 (1.77m) to record a 12th-place finish while Blanton turned in a mark of 5-7.25 (1.71m). Helwick had another fourth-place finish with a jump of 6-4.75 (1.95m).
400m Dash (Event 5 of 10)
Trey Blanton did not compete in the 400m dash, but Alex Hill had his best finish of the day, placing fourth overall with a time of 50.52. Chris Helwick finished just in front of Hill, taking third place while recording a time of 50.29.
