Heptathlon Deacs Enjoy Strong First Day of Combined Events

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's track and field team kicked off their final home meet of the year, the Deacon Combined Events Classic, as Erika Martin, Julie McCauley and Gwen Ricco competed together in the heptathlon.
After the first four events, Martin is in fifth place overall with 2,782 points with three top-10 finishes. Ricco, with 2,714 points, is in seventh place, and McCauley is in 14th with 2,391 points. The current leader, North Carolina's Ariel Roberts, has 3,269 points.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of all the action from the opening day of the Deacon Combined Events Classic.
100m Hurdles (Event 1 of 7)
Freshman Erika Martin led the way for the Deacons as she placed sixth overall with a time of 15.11. Sophomore Gwen Ricco also grabbed a top-10 finish with a mark of 15.44 to finish 10th. Freshman Julie McCauley also turned in a solid performance, finishing 15th after crossing the line in 16.79.
High Jump (Event 2 of 7)
Erika Martin had the first top-five finish of the day for Wake, finishing fourth after a height of 5-3 (1.60m). Julie McCauley placed 10th after a jump of 4-10.25 (1.48m), and Gwen Ricco's jump of 4-7.75 (1.42m) gave her a 12th-place finish.
Shot Put (Event 3 of 7)
Gwen Ricco shined in the shot put, turning in the best finish of the day for the Deacs as she claimed third place with a throw of 36-0 (10.97m). Erika Martin finished 12th with a mark of 28-11.25 (8.82m), and Julie McCauley was 14th after a toss of 27-8.25 (8.44m).
200m Dash (Event 4 of 7)
Gwen Ricco turned in another excellent performance with a time of 25.93 to claim fourth place in the sprinting portion of the heptathlon. Erika Martin grabbed seventh place after crossing the line in 26.35, and Julie McCauley placed 12th overall after finishing in 26.62.
The final three heptathlon events will get underway at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, beginning with the long jump competition. Live results can be found on WakeForestSports.com following the conclusion of each event.
