STANFORD, Calif. - In what turned out to be her final collegiate match, Wake Forest senior Martina Pavelec came up just short of what would have been the best win of her career, falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to No. 8-seed Denise Muresan of Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship in Stanford, Calif. Wednesday.
After digging herself into a 4-0 hole to start the match, 38th-ranked Pavelec rallied to win the next six games, taking the first set 6-4. A lengthy rain delay at the start of the second set gave Muresan a chance to regroup, and when play began again, the two players traded games until Pavelec broke the Michigander to give herself a chance to serve out the match at 5-4.
But Muresan broke back and then took the next two games to win the second set 7-5. She carried the momentum into the final frame, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before closing it out 6-2.
An All-ACC selection in 2010 and 2011, Pavelec closes her account at Wake Forest with a 37-23 singles record and a 28-17 doubles mark. She graduated last week with a degree in economics and communication.
Wake Forest's top doubles team of No. 21 Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert will begin action in the NCAA Doubles Championship tomorrow with a match against Baylor's 27th-ranked duo of Sona Novakova and Nina Secerbegovic.
