STILLWATER, Okla. - Wake Forest junior Lee Bedford made three birdies and finished with an opening round 74 on Tuesday at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Bedford is tied for 47th through 18 holes.
The Cary, NC, native opened his day with a pair of bogeys and a birdie on the par-3 seventh to make the turn in 1-over 37. He then got back to even-par with another birdie at No. 11 but double-bogeyed the par-5 14th to slip back to 2-over. A nice bounce-back birdie at the long par-3 15th lifted him to 1-over but a closing bogey at the 18th gave Bedford a round of 2-over 74.
Karsten Creek is known for its tough setup but the 7,416-yard layout played as benign on Tuesday as it could as the winds were light most of the day. However, the average score of the 156-player field was still over 76.
Georgia Tech's James White didn't find much trouble in the opening round as he made eight birdies and three bogeys to post a 5-under 67. He leads Texas A&M's Cameron Peck by one shot and a pair of players by two shots.
The weather forecast looks favorable for Wednesday with temperatures around 90 degrees and only a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm later in the day. Bedford will likely be done before any weather rolls in as he starts his second round at 9:00 a.m. off the tenth tee. NCAASports.com will have live scoring of the each of the final two rounds.
