WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - One home tournament and 11 home matches at the brand-new tennis facility being constructed adjacent to BB&T Field, as well as 19 contests against teams that finished the 2011 season in the national rankings, highlight the Wake Forest women's tennis team's 2011-12 schedule, which was announced today by head coach Jeff Wyshner.
The new facility, which is being built as the home of the ATP's Winston-Salem Open, will contain 13 courts and will host college tennis for the first time from September 30 through October 2 when the Deacons welcome a number of teams for the Wake Forest Invitational.
"I cannot overstate how excited I am that we are moving into one of the finest tennis facilities in the country," said Wyshner. "The Wake Forest Invitational at the end of September will give us the chance to show off our new courts to the 15 to 20 teams that are coming to Winston-Salem to play in our tournament."
In total, the Demon Deacons will play in six tournaments and 22 dual matches, including eight matches against teams that ended 2011 ranked in the top 30 nationally.
"The quality and depth of the ACC in women's tennis is unmatched across the rest of the country. Our ACC schedule alone gives us eight matches against top-30 teams, which is more than many teams from other conferences would play in their entire season," said Wyshner. "We've supplemented that by playing a non-conference schedule against teams that are almost exclusively ranked between 30th and 60th in the country, which will provide us with competitive matches to prepare for the conference season as well as the opportunity to pick up wins that will give us a strong resume for the NCAA Tournament Committee to consider."
The Demon Deacons will take the courts for the first time on September 16 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the Virginia Invitational. After hosting the Wake Forest Invitational, members of the team will travel to California for the ITA All-American Championships. Wake will round out the fall slate by playing in the ITA Carolina Regional (October 20-24) and the Notre Dame Invitational (November 4-6).
Wake will open 2012 at the UVA Duals on January 14. The Deacs start the dual match slate with a home doubleheader on January 22 against Georgia State and Winthrop. Wake will then travel to Clemson for the ITA Kickoff Weekend where it will take on Kansas State on January 28. The winner of the match will face the winner of the match between Clemson and Purdue, with a trip to the ITA National Indoor Championships on the line.
Other home non-conference matches for the Deacons in 2012 include Minnesota (February 18), South Florida (February 19), and Brown and East Tennessee State (March 11). Road non-conference contests include William & Mary (March 3), VCU (March 4) and UNC Wilmington (March 15).
The Demon Deacons kick-off the conference season on February 26 with a trip down Tobacco Road to face NC State on February 26. Wake will then travel North Carolina for a March 1 match.
Wake's home ACC opener comes on March 18, when the Demon Deacons host Duke. Other home conference matches are Miami (March 24), Florida State (March 25), Virginia Tech (March 31) and Virginia (April 1). The remainder of the 2012 road ACC matches consist of Maryland (April 5), Boston College (April 7), Clemson (April 14) and Georgia Tech (April 15).
The ACC Championships will again be held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. from April 19-22. The first two rounds of the NCAA Championships will take place at campus sites from May 11-13. The final rounds of the NCAA team tournament as well as the NCAA Individual Championships will be held in Athens, Ga. beginning on May 17.
