COLUMBUS, OHIO - Two goals from sophomore Kari Walkley were not quite enough for Wake Forest as they fell to Ohio State by a score of 4-3 in overtime.
With the loss, the Deacs fell to 1-5 on the season, while Ohio State improved to 3-5. Wake now has a 1-1 record in overtime this year after defeating Louisville 3-2 in the home opener at Kentner Stadium.
The second half was a wild back-and-forth affair. Ohio State led 1-0 entering the half and quickly built a two-goal lead after scoring at 38:32. Wake responded with two goals of its own from Walkley (45:44) and senior Kaitlin Piosa (56:08) over the next 20 minutes to even the score.
The Buckeyes reclaimed the lead at 62:22 and looked to have the game under control with less than 10 minutes to play. Walkley found the back of the cage at 64:52 to put an end to those thoughts, however, and forced the game into overtime.
Wake Forest had several opportunities to come out on top in overtime with four penalty corners and six shots, but was unable to capitalize. Goalkeeper Ally Tunitis stonewalled the Deacons with three saves in the sudden-death period before Ohio State grabbed the victory with an unassisted goal from Berta Queralt at the 80:40 mark.
The Buckeyes managed to claim the win despite being outshot by a 21-11 margin for the game. They also lost the penalty corner differential 11-4 to the Demon Deacons.
Senior Lauren Greenwald and sophomore Jess McFadyen notched one assist each on Walkley's goals, and freshman Anna Kozniuk set up the score by Piosa.
This marked the first multi-goal game of Walkley's career. She now leads the Deacs with three goals in 2011 and is tied with Kozniuk for the team lead in points with six.
Queralt, OSU's leading scorer, single-handedly powered the Buckeyes to victory. She scored all four goals for the team to give her seven on the season.
Looking to rebound from today's loss in a big way, the Deacons will seek an upset in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as they take on ACC archrival No. 1 North Carolina.
