BLACKSBURG, Va. - Booker and Malcolm Nunley opened the 2012 indoor track and field season with superb performances in the 60m hurdles event, with Booker claiming victory and Malcolm scoring sixth place as both set new personal-best times in their signature race on the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday inside Rector Field House.
Booker, a junior who redshirted the 2011 indoor season due to injury, was just over a tenth of a second off the school-record time of 7.77 set by Steve Brown in 1991. He posted a personal-best time of 7.90 in the preliminary heats, good for the third-fastest mark overall. Despite his time falling slightly to 7.92 in the finals, Nunley outpaced Marcus Maxey of Clemson by five-hundredths of a second. The promising transfer from South Carolina now owns victories in his first two meets of the season after winning at the Liberty Kickoff in December.
Booker's younger brother Malcolm, a sophomore, broke his personal-best time in the event twice on Friday evening, turning in a time of 8.20 in the preliminaries to place seventh overall while breaking his previous career-best mark of 8.37. He proceeded to shatter that record once again in the finals, crossing the line in 8.15 to earn a sixth-place finish.
Senior Alex Hill also competed in the preliminary heats of the 60m hurdles event and finished with a time of 8.66 to finish 16th overall.
Junior Sean Lunkenheimer and Michael McEnany each posted new personal-bests in the 500m dash en route to top-10 finishes. Lunkenheimer, who earned a victory in the 1,000m run at the Liberty Kickoff, placed second overall with a blistering time of 1:04.67, while McEnany finished in the 10th spot after a run of 1:07.24. Freshman Lucas Hoffman also saw the first action of his career with a 19th-place finish and a final time of 1:12.36.
Rounding out the track events for the Deacons on Friday was freshman Daniel Harrison, who was competing in a solo event, the 300m dash, for the first time in his collegiate career. His debut was impressive as he recorded a time of 35.27 and a ninth-place finish. Harrison, who also ran the first leg of the 4x400m relay at the Liberty Kickoff, is off to a promising start in his young career.
The Virginia Tech Invitational will conclude on Saturday afternoon, beginning with the men's high jump at 11:00 a.m. before closing at approximately 4:15 p.m. with the 4x400m relay. A full recap of Wake Forest's performances will be posted after all events have ended, and live results can be found online at www.flashwest.com.
