BLACKSBURG, Va. - Molly Binder and Erin Brooks, two of the squad's senior leaders, scored top-five finishes in their signature events on Friday evening inside Rector Field House to open the Virginia Tech Invitational.
Binder, hailing from Sudbury, Mass., earned her second top-five finish of the young season after placing third at the Liberty Kickoff meet in early December. Her time of 2:58.14 easily bested her previous record of 2:58.57 and gave her a fifth-place finish in the 1,000m run.
Wake Forest's lone field competitor of the evening, Brooks excelled in the triple jump. The senior holds both the indoor and outdoor school records for the event, and she fell just short of breaking her own record with a mark of 40-5.5 (12.33m) on Friday. Despite just missing the record that she set in 2009, the jump was more than enough to give her a fourth-place finish overall.
Three other Deacons took to the track on the opening day of the meet, including sophomores Erika Martin and Julie McCauley. The duo competed together in both the 60m hurdles and the 300m dash. Martin placed 32nd in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.48 and earned a 25th-place finish in the 300m dash in 43.57. McCauley turned in a new personal-best mark in the hurdles, finishing 39th in 9.97; in the 300m dash, she crossed the line in 44.17 to finish 29th overall.
Freshman Brianna Dekine was the final athlete of the day for the Deacs as she competed in the 500m dash. In only her second collegiate race, Dekine finished in 1:17.81 to finish 14th. The time was an improvement of nearly a second since she ran in the same event at the Liberty Kickoff.
The Virginia Tech Invitational will conclude on Saturday afternoon, beginning with the women's pole vault at 11:00 a.m. before closing at approximately 3:45 p.m. with the 4x400m relay. A full recap of Wake Forest's performances will be posted after all events have ended, and live results can be found online at www.flashwest.com.
