WILMINGTON, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Cyrus Stewart fired a final round 4-under 68 and finished runner-up at the Seahawk Intercollegiate Monday afternoon at the Landfall Country Club.

As a team, the Demon Deacons finished in second place behind champion East Carolina at 9-over par. The Deacons carded their lowest round of the tournament on Monday with a 1-over 289.

"We got off to a bit of a slow start today but we played the middle-stretch really well," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We ended-up under-par on the back nine which was where we struggled in the final round last year. So I'm happy. We keep improving and I'm excited about the rest of the spring."

Stewart, who was playing as an individual this week, shot rounds of 71-72-68 to finish at 5-under par. This was just his second tournament as a Demon Deacon and he finished just two strokes off the pace.

"Cyrus played really great the last two days," Haas said. "In my 15 years, I have never had an individual play as well as he did and qualify for the next event. I'm really proud of him."

Sophomore Thomas Birdsey posted his second-straight round of 2-under 70 and finished the tournament tied for fourth at 3-under par. This was Birdsey's second top-10 of the season and his 2-under 70s in the final two rounds matched his lowest rounds of the year.

Senior Lee Bedford, who was coming off a victory last week, posted a second-straight sold finish. He carded a 1-over 73 on Monday and finished in a tie for 6th at 2-under par.

Juniors Charlie Harrison and Evan Beck each finished with final rounds of 1-over 73. Harrison tied for 18th at 6-over par after opening with rounds of 74-75 while Beck was tied for 24th at 8-over par.

Sophomore John Varol rounded out the Deacon scorers with a final round 78.

East Carolina posted a second-straight under-par round to win the team title by nine shots over Wake Forest while South Carolina's Wesley Bryan shot a final round 70 to win the individual title by two shots over Stewart.

The Demon Deacons will have a little more than two weeks off before returning to action at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. That event is scheduled to begin on Friday, March. 16.
