WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's junior left-hander Brian Holmes has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the ACC Pitcher of the Week by the conference office after completing a no-hitter against Marshall on Sunday night.
This marks the first time that Holmes has earned either award.
Holmes' no-hitter against the Thundering Herd was the first one by a Wake Forest pitcher since Ben Clayton accomplished the feat against UNC Greensboro on March 27, 2000.
A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Holmes' no-hitter doubles as his first-career complete game, as well. He was able to do so behind a career-best 10 strikeouts.
Marshall scored one run in the sixth inning following a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. The bags became full after a walk occurred in between two hit batters.
Holmes was nearly perfect in the other eight innings, allowing just one base runner in the second inning. He retired the first four batters he faced and 16 of the first 17 before Marshall put together its run. Holmes then finished the game by sitting down the final nine batters of the game.
With Holmes' selection as ACC Pitcher of the Week, a Demon Deacon has now claimed the award in each of the past two weeks. Fellow junior lefty Tim Cooney earned the award for Wake Forest last Monday.
Demon Deacons have only won the ACC Pitcher of the Week honor on consecutive weeks one other time, as John Hendricks and Mike MacDougal swept the final two weeks of the 1997 season. Kyle Sleeth won two straight awards, but his accolades came on the last week of the 2002 season and the first week of the 2003 season.
The no-hitter also extended Wake Forest's winning streak to eight games. The Demon Deacons are now 9-4 on the year, including an 8-1 record at home. The team will be back in action tomorrow for Game 1 of a doubleheader with Valparaiso at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
