GREENSBORO, N.C. - After tossing eight innings of shutout baseball on Friday, Wake Forest left-hander Tim Cooney was named ACC Pitcher of the Week for the second time during the 2012 season, the conference office announced on Monday, April 16.
It was the third career ACC Pitcher of the Week Award for Cooney, who helped the Demon Deacons to a 4-2 win over visiting Georgia Tech in the series opener.
The eight innings tied a season-high, while Cooney scattered nine hits and did not give up a run. The Collegeville, Pa., native also struck out five Yellow Jackets - with four of those strikeouts coming against the top three batters in the Yellow Jacket order - and did not walk a batter. Cooney also pounded the strike zone with 83 of 112 pitches in for strikes (74.1 percent).
Cooney's two weekly awards, coupled with another for fellow lefty Brian Holmes, gives the Deacs three of the season's nine Pitcher of the Week Awards. Duke is the only other ACC school with multiple awards (2) in 2012.
Last weekend, Wake Forest took two-of-three from Georgia Tech to earn a series win and will be back in action on Tuesday, April 17 at UNC Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
