WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team began the 2012 campaign on Thursday with its first two practice sessions of the season under the guidance of head coach Jennifer Averill who is in her 21st year at the helm.
"The kids have done a lot of hard work over the course of the summer, so we're excited about that commitment," said Averill. "I think anytime you add eight freshmen to the squad, there is a lot of energy that comes along with that. I'm really thrilled with the organization that's come from the players within. There's a good aura about this squad, and the coaching staff has already felt that"
The Demon Deacons lost eight seniors from last year's team but replenished the roster with fresh faces in 2012.
Aside from the abundance of youth, Wake Forest brings back its top four point scorers from a year ago, including All-American Anna Kozniuk who scored four goals and dished out seven assists.
Lizzie Rae, Kari Walkley and Jess McFadyen are also back for the Deacs. Rae led the team with 13 goals and five assists a year ago, while Walkley added 11 goals and McFadyen scored five.
Wake Forest will open the season on August 25-26 by hosting the ACC/Big-Ten Challenge. The Deacs will play Iowa on Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. and Michigan on Aug. 26 at 11:30 a.m.
