WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Kaitlyn Ruhf, Lizzie Rae and Jess Newak have each been named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic field hockey team as announced by the conference office on Thursday morning.
Both Rae and Ruhf have received the honors prior to this season, while Newak made the cut in her first opportunity as a freshman.
To be eligible for consideration, each athlete must post at least a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester in addition to maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA over their entire academic career.
Ruhf, a senior from Bethlehem, Pa., earned the academic accolades for the second consecutive year. She started all 20 contests between the pipes for the Demon Deacons in 2012, making 83 saves and logging a career-high .675 save percentage. For her career, she made 69 starts in 72 appearances for the Deacs and she will end her time at Wake Forest with 307 total saves, fourth-most in school history. Ruhf is set to graduate in May with a degree in English.
A senior from Christchurch, New Zealand, Rae received a spot on the All-Academic team for the third time after also earning the honors following the 2009 and 2011 seasons. Like Ruhf, she also started each of Wake's 20 games in 2012 en route to scoring six goals and assisting on two more to finish with 14 points. Her career totals of 39 goals and 12 assists demonstrate just how vital she was for the Deacs over the last four years. Rae will graduate in May with a degree in psychology and minors in communication and philosophy.
Newak, hailing from Mountain Top, Pa., was one of just four freshmen honored on the squad this season. She appeared in all 20 games with 19 starts and finished the 2012 season with five goals, three assists and 13 total points, tying her with Krysta Wangerin in each of those categories for most on the team among freshmen. Newak has yet to declare a major at Wake.
Harriet Tibble of Maryland was named the 2012 Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year, only the 13th time that has been accomplished in any of the conference's sports.
