AWENDAW, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team persevered through difficult conditions on Monday at The Hootie at Bulls Bay and are right in the mix heading into the final day.
Wake started the day on the back nine, the tougher of the two sides, in cool breezy conditions. The team pushed through the conditions and finished with a round of 311 in the morning. But the afternoon round saw the Deacs make a total of 18 birdies and they are just 2-over par with a couple of holes to finish. The second round was suspended Monday evening due to darkness.
"The guys hung real tough this morning and I'm proud of them for that," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "The conditions this morning were almost unplayable and we tried to tell them that a round of 76 would be ok. They didn't get too beat down with the scores in the morning and fought back well in the afternoon."
The Deacons are in seventh place in the 15-team field and trail leader LSU by 12 shots heading into the final day. The Tigers are finished with their second round while four Deacs were still on the course when play was halted.
Senior Evan Beck led the Deacs on Monday as he is just 3-over par and tied for sixth. Beck has four holes to play in his second round Tuesday morning. Junior Thomas Birdsey shot a 3-over 75 in the morning and is just 2-over in his second round.
Fellow junior John Varol posted an opening round 81 but has made five birdies and an eagle in the second round and has one of the best rounds going at 2-under par. Varol is 7-over for the tournament.
Freshman Davis Womble made a birdie at the par-5 sixth in the afternoon round to get back to 9-over for the day. He shot an 80 in round one and is 2-over with a hole to play in the second round. Senior Charlie Harrison was the only Deacon to finish both rounds as he posted scores of 82-76.
The second round is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning with final round set for a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final day.
