BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team fired a 9-over 297 in the opening round of the Bryan National Collegiate on Friday and is in a tie for sixth in the 17-team field.

The Deacs made the turn in 6-over par but made a total of seven birdies in their counting scores on the back nine to come home in just 3-over. The 297 total is tied for the team's lowest round this season. Virginia shot the second-lowest round in tournament history on Friday, a 7-under 281, and leads Vanderbilt by five shots.

Sophomore Marissa Dodd has had a solid spring season and she kept it rolling on Friday as she made three birdies and just two bogeys to post a 1-under 71. That is tied for the lowest round of her career and she will start Saturday's round in a tie for fifth.

Junior Olafia Kristinsdottir and sophomore Allison Emrey each opened with rounds of 3-over 75. Kristinsdottir had a roller coaster round as she made five birdies, eight bogeys and just five pars while Emrey was a little more consistent with two birdies and five bogeys. Both players are in a tie for 33rd.

Freshman Mariana Sims opened the day with a birdie and was just 1-over par through 15 holes. But three bogeys down the stretch left her with and opening round 76 and she is tied for 45th.

Senior Greta Lange had a tough time getting rolling this morning and made the turn in 5-over par. She then made a birdie at the par-5 11th to get on track and finished with a 6-over 78. Sophomore Emily Wright is playing as an individual this week and she opened the tournament with a solid round of 5-over 77.

Virginia's Elizabeth Brightwell was catapulted by an eagle-2 at the par-4 second hole and would shoot a 4-under 68 on Friday. That gives her a one-shot lead over Vanderbilt's Rene Sobolewski heading into the second round.

Wake Forest will be in the second wave off the first tee on Saturday beginning at 9:05 a.m. The Deacs will be playing with South Carolina and Arkansas. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
