Merckle Wins ACC Championship in Javelin

RALEIGH, N.C. - Jessie Merckle took first in the javelin on Thursday winning All-ACC honors at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Raleigh, N.C. hosted by NC State.
Merckle registered a mark of 49.59m to become the ACC Champion which is just under a meter shy of the school record she set in March at the Wake Forest Open. She becomes the first female from Wake Forest to win an ACC Championship since Anna Nosenko in 2010.
Montasia Golden placed in the 400m hurdles finals on Saturday along with Sean Lunkenheimer in the men's 400m hurdles while Kyle Graves qualified for the 1500m finals.
At the end of the first day, the Wake Forest women's track and field team sits fifth in the conference with 17.0 points.
Women's 400m Hurdles (Prelims)
Golden finished in eighth place with a time of 1:03.42 as she qualified for the finals on Saturday.
Women's 1500m (Prelims)
Samantha Jones was the top finisher for Wake Forest with a time of 4:32.99 as she placed 15th. Aubrey Waggoner took 17th with a time of 4:34.19.
Women's 10000m (Finals)
Nicole Irving finished in an impressive time of 34:36.63 which put her in fifth place.
Women's Javelin
Merckle defeated the nearest competitor by nearly a meter in winning the ACC title in women's javelin with a mark of 49.59m.Erika Martin was seventh with a throw of 37.97m.
Women's Pole Vault
Katie Adair finished in eighth place with a mark of 3.75m while Sydney Adair took 10th place with a mark of 3.60m.
Women's Heptathlon
Martin began the heptathlon by finishing second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.66 seconds. She took fifth in the shot put with a mark of 10.62m (34-10.25). Martin took fourth in the 200m with a time of 26.07 seconds while she was seventh in the high jump at 1.58m.
Men's 400m Hurdles (Prelims)
Lunkenheimer took eighth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.41 for his best time this season. He qualified for the finals on Saturday evening.
Men's 1500m (Prelims)
Graves took 10th place with a time of 3:47.92 which qualifies him for the finals on Saturday. Anthony Marois finished with a time of 3:52.51 while Alexander Rose crossed the line at 3:55.02. Ryan Horgan finished at 3:56.36.
Men's 10000m (Finals)
Conner Crowley crossed the line at 31.51.10 for 16th place.
Men's Discus
Steve Michaelsen placed in ninth with a throw of 48.76m.
