GREENSBORO, N.C. - On an overcast and breezy day at Sedgefield Country Club, the Wake Forest women's golf team opened the ACC Championship with a round of 310 and are in sixth place in the nine team field.
Individually, sophomore Marissa Dodd carded an opening round 76 and stands in a tie for 12th at 5-over par.
Tee times on Friday were moved up 45 minutes and split tees were used because of the threat of incoming weather. The incoming rain brought breezy conditions which affected scores. The Deacs were 13-over par on each side and finished at 26-over for the day. Duke carded a round of 9-over 293 and leads after the first day.
Dodd opened her day with four bogeys on the opening nine and slipped to 6-over par through 12 holes. But she made five-straight pars and a long uphill birdie putt at No. 18 to post a 76. She will start the second round in a tie for 12th.
Like Dodd, junior Olafia Kristinsdottir made a nice up-and-down birdie at No. 18 to finish with a 6-over 77. She is tied for 18th heading into Saturday. Freshman Mariana Sims made the turn in even-par but had a rough start to the back nine and would end up posting a 7-over 78.
Sophomore Allison Emrey finished one shot behind Sims with an opening round 79 and senior Greta Lange rounded out the Deacon scorers with a 13-over 84.
In the individual race, Virginia's Brittany Altomare weathered the breeze with two bogeys and two birdies to grab the opening round lead at even-par 71. She holds a one shot advantage over three players.
The Demon Deacons will start the second round at 9:20 a.m. and will be paired with North Carolina and Florida State. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds and there will also be live video coverage on TheACC.com beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
