ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the third time this season, Wake Forest's Evan Beck finished runner-up at an event, this time at the Navy Spring Invitational.
In cool and breezy conditions, Beck carded a 4-over 75 and finished in a tie for second place at 3-over par. He finished just one shot off the pace of Towson's Joe Gunerman who shot a final round 2-under 69 to finish at 2-over.
This was Beck's third runner-up of the year and his fifth top-5 finish in eight events. Beck, a Byron Nelson Award finalist, has finished outside of the top-10 just once in eight events this season and he leads the team with a 71.9 scoring average.
Fellow senior Charlie Harrison led the Demon Deacons on Sunday with a final round 73. He finished at 7-over for the event and notched his second top-10 of the year.
Junior John Varol followed an opening round 75 with a 77 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 20th at 10-over par. That was Waxhaw, N.C., native's second top-20 finish of the season. Fellow juniors Thomas Birdsey and Beau Cutts rounded out the Deacon scorers with rounds of 9-over 80 on Sunday.
As a team, the Demon Deacons came into the final round looking for its first victory in over three years. However, a round of 305 left the Deacs two shots out of a tie for the top spot at 33-over. Virginia and Pennsylvania tied for the lead at 31-over 599.
Beck and the Demon Deacons will try and break their winless droughts this upcoming weekend at the ACC Championship. The tournament will be played at the Old North State Golf Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C. The first round is set for Friday, April 26.
