WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey program recently wrapped up its eighth annual Weed Whackers youth initiative aimed at spreading awareness and a love of the game throughout the local community.
The program was open to both boys and girls from ages 4 through 11 and took place over the course of the last two months at Kentner Stadium on Wednesday evenings.
Head coach Jennifer Averill was very pleased with the progression of the young players throughout the program.
"On behalf of the entire Wake Forest hockey program, we would like to thank all of the future hockey players for joining us this winter/spring season. The sessions were quite chilly (with the exception of our last day) and yet the young hockey players showed their true colors by not allowing the weather to deter their enthusiasm and desire to learn," Averill said.
"We thank you all for your eagerness and patience to learn a new sport. For our returnees, we were encouraged and motivated by your growth and passion. Through this community outreach, our players learn a great deal about themselves and the young talent that we have right here in our own backyard. Do well in school and we look forward to seeing you all this summer and fall during the hockey season. Go Deacs!"
Through the continued success of the Weed Whackers program, there is little doubt that Coach Averill and the Wake Forest field hockey program are doing their part to expand the footprint of the sport within the local community.
