Kristinsdottir's 69 Sends Her To NCAA Championship

NORMAN, Okla. - Wake Forest junior Olafia Kristinsdottir fired a 3-under 69 in the final round of the NCAA Central Regional and earned one of the two individual qualifying spots for the NCAA Championship.
Kristinsdottir made six birdies and just one bogey through the first 14 holes on Saturday and was 5-under par. She then made a couple of pars and hit her drive down the middle of the 18th fairway. As she was walking to her ball, the officials halted play for lightning in the area.
After a delay of two hours, Kristinsdottir hit her third shot on the par-5 18th into the water that fronted the green. She would go onto to make double-bogey on the hole and finish with a 69. That put her in a tie with Washington's Ying Luo at 1-under par for the tournament. Both players claimed the two individual qualifying spots.
This was the first tournament of Kristinsdottir's career in which she finished under-par. Her previous career-best 54-hole finish was 3-over par which she did on a couple of occasions. She is also the sixth Demon Deacon to qualify for the NCAA Championship as an individual.
As a team, the Deacons knew they needed a special round on Saturday and it just wasn't there. Wake closed with a final round 301 and finished in 14th place in the 24-team field. The Deacs were 37-over par which was 17-shots behind Michigan State who grabbed the eighth and final qualifying spot.
Sophomore Marissa Dodd birdied her opening hole of the round and would finish with a 3-over 75. For the tournament, Dodd made five birdies and finished in a tie for 50th at 8-over par.
Fellow sophomore Allison Emrey had a couple of double bogeys early in her round but finished her season with a birdie at the par-5 18th to post a 77. She finished in a tie for 93rd at 17-over. Mariana Sims finished a couple of shots behind Emrey at 19-over after a final round 80 while Greta Lange was a shot further back at 20-over.
Duke shot an awesome round of 12-under 276 to win the regional at 13-under par. That was six shots better than host Oklahoma.
The season is finished for the team but Kristinsdottir will advance on to the NCAA Championships which are set for the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga., on May 21-24.
