WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Matt Johl has been named to the Wake Forest field hockey coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for the upcoming season.
Johl, a native of New Zealand, is a recent graduate of Otago University with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and a Graduate Diploma in teaching.
"When the opportunity at Wake Forrest came up I jumped at it," said Johl. "I am excited and honored to join this immensely experienced coaching staff and successful program".
Prior to joining Wake Forest, Johl was the Head Coach of the Otago University women from 2011-13. Johl has also had experience at a high performance level as head coach of the Southern U18 Regional Men from 2012-13, assistant coach of the Southern NHL Women in 2012 and Coach of the Southern U21 Men in 2013.
Johl also served as the video analyst for the Southern NHL Men in 2012. Having attended NZ Level 1 and Level 2 High Performance Coaching Clinics, Johl was determined to experience coaching overseas to further his development.
Johl's passion for field hockey and coaching has stemmed from his own experiences as a player. He played for Otago University Men from 2008-13 and for Waikato as an age group provincial player.
Wake Forest opens the season at home on Aug. 30 against Miami (OH) in Kentner Stadium.
