PITTSBURGH - Devin Thomas turned in 17 points and nine rebounds, but Pittsburgh used a late first-half run to gain separation from Wake Forest and earn an 80-65 defeat of the Demon Deacons on Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
Pittsburgh (15-1, 3-0 ACC) began the game by jumping out to a quick 8-1 lead and then pushed it to 23-12 before Wake Forest was able to scrap back into it.
The Deacons (11-5, 1-2 ACC) used a 7-2 run, which was fueled by five points from Thomas, to trim the deficit to six with under seven minutes to play in the first period. However, the Panthers ended the half with a 12-4 run to turn a 28-22 margin into a 40-26 halftime advantage.
Thomas finished just shy of his fifth double-double of the season. The sophomore southpaw went 8-for-11 from the field and also added a block before fouling out with five minutes to go in the game. Of his nine total rebounds, five came on the offensive end.
Codi Miller-McIntyre and Coron Williams joined Thomas in double figures with 10 points apiece. Miller-McIntyre led the team with four assists, and Madison Jones had three.
Tyler Cavanaugh turned in seven points and five rebounds, while Arnaud William Adala Moto scored seven for the Deacons.
Lamar Patterson led Pitt with 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while Talib Zanna posted his ACC-leading fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Pittsburgh extended its home winning streak at the Petersen Events Center to 13 games, while remaining undefeated in its inaugural season in the ACC.
Wake Forest and Pittsburgh met for the first time ever on Saturday. It was the Deacons' fifth all-time trip to the Steel City and the first since the 1971 Steel Bowl tournament.
Wake Forest returns home to the Joel Coliseum on Wednesday, Jan. 15, when the Deacons host rival NC State at 9 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network and can also be heard on the Wake Forest IMG Sports Network.
