SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Five Demon Deacons placed in the top 11, led by Kent Garrett's second-place finish, as Wake Forest handily won the Upstate Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Demon Deacons finished with 36 team points to easily beat ACC rival Georgia Tech, who took second with 54 points.
Garrett led a Wake Forest pack that saw each of the Deacons' top seven runners finish within one minute of each other. Garrett, who already has one win to his credit this season, just missed a second as he finished the 8k course in 25:08.32--10 seconds behind meet winner Jeremy Greenwald of Georgia Tech.
Sophomore Jacob Poyner was sixth in 25:20.42, and senior Alexander Rose crossed right behind him in seventh in 25:21.77.
Sophomore Alex Giacco followed in 10th with a time of 25:30.82, while senior Connor Crowley completed the Deacons' scoring five in 11th in 25:34.22.
Junior Ryan Horgan and senior Kyle Graves were sixth and seventh, respectively for the Deacons. Horgan placed 26th in 25:50.22, and Graves was 31st in 25:59.59.
The team win was Wake Forest's second of the season after its triumph at the season-opening Covered Bridge Open in late August.
Wake Forest returns to action next weekend at the Royals Challenge, hosted by Queens University Charlotte on Oct. 11 in Charlotte, N.C.
