
Wake Forest Opens Season With Win Over Longwood

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Junior Kandice Ball posted her first career double-double to lead the Wake Forest women's basketball team to a season-opening 64-60 win over Longwood on Saturday at the LJVM Coliseum.
Wake Forest starts the season with a win for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons. The Demon Deacons have won their last six season openers at home.
Amber Campbell tied for the team lead with 13 points in her collegiate debut. The freshman also had seven rebounds, two blocks, one assist and went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Ataijah Taylor was the third Deacon to score in double figures with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Ball posted career highs in points (13) and rebounds (12) to go along with two blocks, two steals and two assists. Sophomore Jill Brunori grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds including 10 on the offensive glass.
It was a back-and-forth contest through the opening 10 minutes. Sophomore Mykia Jones drained a three pointer with 9:27 on the clock to give the Deacons a 20-18 lead that they would never relinquish. Wake Forest took a 36-31 lead into the break.
Wake Forest started the second half with a seven-point run capped by a Taylor three pointer. The basket gave the Deacs their biggest lead of the day, 43-31. Longwood cut the lead to three, 63-60, with 2:06 to play when Daeisha Brown picked up a steal and scored on a fast-break layup. The defense was able to make stops in the final two minutes and Campbell added a made free throw to secure the 64-60 victory.
Brown finished with a game-high 29 points to lead Longwood.
