CANCUN, Mexico - The Wake Forest women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 72-55, to Princeton on Thursday in the opening game of the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya. Sophomore Mykia Jones and freshman Taylor Gordon each scored 13 points in the game.

Jones scored 13 points and led the Deacons with three assists. Gordon finished with 13 points and two rebounds. Freshman Amber Campbell added 10 points and three steals.

The Deacons (4-1) got off to a slow start and couldn't overcome the early deficit despite a much better second half.

Wake Forest scored the first basket of the game, a layup by Kandice Ball, but quickly fell behind 6-2. Dearica Hamby stepped out and hit a three to stop the Tigers' run with 15:41 on the clock. The Deacs went scoreless over the next four and a half minutes until Campbell grabbed a steal and went down for the fast-break bucket.

Wake Forest trailed 17-12 with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half after a three-pointer by Campbell. Princeton answered with a three-pointer on the other end that sparked a 9-0 run for the Tigers. The Deacons trailed 40-20 in the final minute of the first before Gordon drained a three-pointer. Princeton led Wake Forest 40-23 at halftime.

The Deacs were able to cut the lead to single digits twice in the second half. Millesa Calicott hit a three with nine minutes remaining to make it a 52-43 Princeton lead. The Tigers scored the next four points to lead 56-43. Gordon answered with a three-pointer and Nicole Floyd followed with two good free throws to pull the Deacons within eight, 56-48 with six minutes left in the game.

The run was halted as Princeton limited Wake Forest to just one made field goal for the remainder of the game and the Deacons fell, 72-55.

Hamby was limited by foul trouble in the game, finishing with nine points and five rebounds.
