
Wake Forest Loses to Arizona in Overtime

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest rallied in the second half and forced overtime before falling to Arizona 72-69 on Sunday at the LJVM Coliseum.
Kelila Atkinson led Wake Forest with 19 points and Dearica Hamby recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Wake Forest (6-3) trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half before tying the game with less than 30 second to play in regulation. The Deacons led early in the extra period, but went 2-of-8 from the free-throw line in overtime and fell to Arizona 72-69.
Milan Quinn was fouled pulling down an offensive rebound and made both free throws to give Wake Forest its first lead of the game, 9-8, with 11:00 on the clock. Atkinson scored the six-straight points for the Deacons to open up a 17-11 lead with just under eight minutes left in the half. Wake Forest opened up its biggest lead of the half, 24-11, when Atkinson found Millesa Calicott open for a three-pointer with 5:52 to play in the first.
Arizona went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to pull within one, 24-23. Atkinson stopped the run with a bucket off the inbound pass that gave Wake Forest a 26-23 lead to end the first half.
The Wildcats opened up a 16-point lead, 53-37, with 8:20 left in the second period. Mykia Jones started a 10-0 Wake Forest run with a layup and the Deacons cut the lead to six, 53-47, with just over four minutes to play. Hamby scored four-straight points and Atkinson scored on a fast break to tie the game 58-58 with 28 seconds left in the half. Atkinson had a look at the game-winning layup in regulation but came up just short.
Arizona's Candice Warthen made two free throws with 1:28 left in overtime to give the Wildcats a 67-66 lead. Wake Forest had chances to take the lead back but went 2-of-8 from the free-throw line in overtime, losing 72-69.
NOTES:
Wake Forest hadn't played an overtime game since March 8, 2013. The Demon Deacons lost to Maryland in overtime in the ACC Tournament.
Dearica Hamby recorded her fourth double-double of the season and the 29th of her career with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Kelila Atkinson came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points. She also led the team with four assists.
Wake Forest scored 19 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.

Wake Forest goes back on the road for the final time in 2014 for a Dec. 14 game at Richmond.
The Demon Deacons lead the series with Richmond 6-4.
This is the first meeting between the two teams since the 2009-10 season.
