WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest has received the 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award, an honor which recognizes the field hockey squads that achieved a Team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of 2013-14.
Every ACC team, including newcomer Syracuse, was presented with the honor, evidence of the high academic standards of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Other North Carolina schools that were recognized include Davidson and Appalachian State.
Freshman Lindsay Graham earned All-ACC Academic honors following the 2013 season, while junior Tyra Clemmenson was a member of the NFHCA's National Academic Squad for the 2012 season.
American University, where current assistant coach Barb Weinberg worked with goalkeepers last season, earned the distinction of having the highest GPA in the nation as the team logged a strong mark of 3.58.
Central Michigan, Hofstra, Missouri State and Drexel rounded out the top five for cumulative GPA.
In addition to the team honor, seven individual players earned spots on the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. The Demon Deacons were well represented by freshmen, who made up five of the seven selections.
Clemmenson earned a spot on the team for the second straight season, while Graham, Katie Osborne, Lauren Rogers, Abbey Thornhill, Sarah Thornhill and Heather Wiley earned the accolades for the first time in their Wake Forest careers.
Graham led the freshman class in scoring this season, notching a pair of goals on just seven shots for the Demon Deacons. Sarah Thornhill led the class in shots with 12, and Osborne played just under 63 minutes between the pipes without surrendering a goal.
