AWENDAW, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team opened The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Sunday with its lowest opening round of the year, a 2-under 282, and is tied for third.
The Deacons got under par rounds from Cyrus Stewart, Davis Womble and Thomas Birdsey en route to its lowest round of the season. Wake is tied for third, just one shot behind Missouri and South Carolina. The 6-under 282 is also the lowest opening round in relation to par in almost four years for the Deacs.
Stewart fired a bogey-free 3-under 69 on Sunday. That was the second-lowest round of his career. He shot a 4-under 68 in the final round of the 2012 Seahawk Intercollegiate. He starts the second round in a six-way tie for fourth, just one shot out of the lead.
Womble also carded his lowest round of the season on Sunday as he made six birdies on his way to a 2-under 70. He had an up-and-down opening nine of even-par 36 but then made three birdies and just one bogey on the back nine. He is in a tie for 10th.
Birdsey has struggled a bit this spring but carded a 1-under 71 in the final round of the San Diego Classic last time out and then made five birdies in his round of 1-under 71 on Sunday. He is currently tied for 18th headed into Monday.
Freshman Danny Guise, who is coming off a third-place finish at the San Diego Classic, was 3-under par through his first 10 holes on Sunday. But a minor stumble coming down the stretch left him with an opening round of even-par 72. Fellow freshman Clancy Waugh got off to a rough start and was 4-over through eight holes. He would then play the final 10 holes in just 1-over and opened with a 77.
The Deacons are paired with ACC-foe Virginia and Kentucky in the second round. The group is the second wave to go off the front nine beginning at 9:50 a.m. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
