GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Sierra Sims tied her season-low with a 1-under 71 on Friday to pace the Demon Deacons in the opening round of the Bryan National Collegiate at the Bryan Park Golf Course.
Sims was one of just five players in the 96-player field to break par in the cool tough conditions. The recently converted greens (bent grass to Bermuda) of the Bryan Park Champions Course made scoring difficult on Friday. The scoring average for the day was 76.68.
As a team, the Demon Deacons opened with a round of 17-over 305 and are in a tie for 14th place. Duke took the first round lead with a 4-over 292 and leads Michigan State by two shots.
Sierra Sims started her day with two bogeys in the first seven holes to fall to 2-over par. But she rallied with a birdie at the par-4 first and then made two birdies in the final three holes to post a 71. That was just her second under-par round of the year and she'll start the second round just one-shot off the lead.
Junior Allison Emrey shook-off a pair of early double-bogeys and would make four birdies in her round of 4-over 76. That has her in a tie for 34th headed into the weekend.
Senior Olafia Kristinsdottir made six bogeys and 12 pars on Friday for a 6-over 78 while sophomore Mariana Sims posted an opening round 8-over 80. Junior Marissa Dodd rounded-out the Deacon five on Friday with an 82.
Playing as individuals this week, junior Emily Wright and redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Doty each opened with rounds of a 4-over 76. Wright made one birdie and 12 pars in her round while Doty rebounded from a rocky start and finished with nine-straight pars.
The start of the second round has been changed to a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. because of the threat of inclement weather on Saturday. The Demon Deacons are paired with NC State and UNC Wilmington and will be starting on holes 13-15. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
