GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Sierra Sims fired a second-straight 1-under 71 and holds the individual lead through two rounds of the Bryan National Collegiate at Bryan Park.
Sims had a double-bogey on her fifth hole of the day but countered that with three birdies. She is 2-under for the tournament and leads a quartet of players by one shot heading into the final round. The last Wake Forest individual to win the BNC was Cheyenne Woods in 2010.
As a team, the Demon Deacons carded a 2-over 290 on Saturday, the second-lowest round of the day, and jumped from a tie for 14th to a tie for 5th at 19-over par. Duke continues to lead the event at 6-over par.
"We had wonderful balance today and I think it was one of our most consistent rounds of the season," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "Counting our individual players, we had six rounds of 73 or better day. The players started to get used to the greens and saw some putts fall. We also have put in a lot of work on our short game and it really showed today."
Junior Allison Emrey and senior Olafia Kristinsdottir are each tied for 37th at 7-over par heading into Sunday. Kristinsdottir rebounded from an opening 78 to post a 1-over 73. That was tied for her lowest round of the season. Emrey sandwiched three bogeys and a double-bogey with a pair of birdies for a round of 75 on Saturday.
Sophomore Mariana Sims and junior Marissa Dodd each bounced-back from tough first rounds to card 1-over 73s in the second. Sims had the most consistent round of the day, making 17 pars and just one bogey. Dodd had slipped to 3-over par for the round through 12 holes but birdied three of her final five holes to finish up.
Individually, junior Emily Wright and redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Doty have both played well through the first two days. Each played opened the tournament with a round of 4-over 76 and then would card a 1-over 73 on Saturday. Wright made a total of 15 pars and one birdie in her round while Doty led the team with five birdies on the day. Both players start the final round in a tie for 27th at 5-over par.
The final round is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday morning. The Demon Deacons are paired with Louisville and South Carolina and will start on holes 4-6. Follow along with the final round on Golfstat.com.
