HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Wake Forest junior Allison Emrey shot a 2-over 73 to pace the Demon Deacons in the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Friday.
As a team, Wake Forest carded a 15-over 299 and stands in 10th place after 18 holes. Duke carded an even-par 284 and leads Vanderbilt and Alabama by nine shots.
Emrey started her day with four bogeys in the first five holes but made four birdies in the final seven to post her fifth round of 73 this season. She will start the second round on Saturday in a tie for 14th.
Sophomore Mariana Sims made a total of four birdies in her round on Friday and finished with a 3-over 74. She is tied for 22nd.
Marissa Dodd offset three double-bogeys with three birdies and finished with a 4-over 75. Freshman Sierra Sims opened the tournament on Friday with a 6-over 77 while senior Olafia Kristinsdottir carded a first round 85.
Redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Doty, who is playing as an individual again this week, matched Mariana Sims with an opening 74 and is tied for 22nd.
Alabama's Stephanie Meadow bogeyed her second hole of the day but made five birdies the rest of the way to shoot a 4-under 67. She leads the tournament by two shots over a pair of players.
Wake Forest is paired with Tennessee and Virginia in the second round which starts for the group at 9:30 a.m. off the 10th tee. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
