HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Wake Forest carded the lowest final round of any team to climb from 11th into a sixth-place finish at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Sunday.
Junior Allison Emrey fired a 1-under 70 to finish in a tie for ninth at four-over par. That is her best finish of the season.
As a team, the Demon Deacons rebounded from rounds of 299 and 302 to start to the tournament and posted a 2-over 286 on Sunday. That was not only the lowest round on Sunday but it was the second-lowest round of the tournament. Duke posted the lowest round, with an opening round 284, and used that to propel it to a 10-shot victory.
"We played really well today and I'm proud of the way we finished," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "We had a bit of a rough first two rounds but we bounced-back today with a good round and beat a couple of great teams. This will not only help us in the rankings but I think it will do so much more for our confidence."
Emrey made five birdies in her round on Sunday and a total of 11 for the weekend. Her 1-under 70 on Sunday was just her second under-par round of the season. She finished the tournament in a tie for ninth which was her best finish of the season and the second top-10 of her career.
Sophomore Mariana Sims also had a very nice tournament as she finished tied for 21st at 8-over par. Sims carded rounds of 74-72-75 and made 10 birdies over the 54 holes.
Junior Marissa Dodd and freshman Sierra Sims finished tied for 31st and tied for 36th, respectively. Dodd had an up-and-down first tournament of the spring and opened this weekend with rounds of 75-79. However, her round on Sunday featured five birdies, including three in the final four holes to post a 1-under 70. Sims followed a pair of 77s with a solid round of even-par 72 on Sunday to finish at 13-over par.
Senior Olafia Kristinsdottir rounded-out the Deacon-five this weekend with scores of 85-79-78 and finished tied for 84th.
Redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Doty, who was playing as an individual again this week, played solid with rounds of 74-73-76 and finished tied for 26th.
The Demon Deacons will return to action at the end of March as they co-host the Bryan National Collegiate at the Bryan National Golf Club in Greensboro, N.C. The first round is set for March 28.
