
Deacons Finish 6th At ACC Championship

UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. - Wake Forest carded a final round 291 and finished sixth at the 2014 ACC Men's Golf Championship at the Old North State Golf Club.
The Demon Deacons got off to a great start and briefly held a share of the lead atop the tightly bunched leaderboard. But Georgia Tech found its traction and shot the lowest round of the tournament, a 15-under 273, and won the tournament by six shots over Florida State. Wake came in sixth as the Deacs finished the 54-hole event at even-par.
Individually, freshman Clancy Waugh finished tied for 14th at 2-under par in his first ACC Championship. Waugh made two eagles in his round of 76 on Sunday and led the field in scoring on the par-5s as he was 10-under par for the week. He also was second in the field in birdies made with 13.
Senior Thomas Birdsey, playing in his last ACC Championship, carded rounds of 74-70-73 and finished in a tie for 23rd at 1-over par. Birdsey was second in the field this week with 41 pars in the 54 holes.
Sophomore Davis Womble joined Waugh atop the field with two eagles for the week as he eagled the par-5 11th both Saturday and Sunday. Womble made two early birdies on Sunday but bogeyed holes eight and ten to drop back to even-par. After the eagle at 11, he closed with seven-straight pars to post a 2-under 70. That was his third under-par round in six rounds at Old North State and he finished in a tie for 28th at 3-over par.
Junior Cyrus Stewart carded a final round 76 and finished the tournament one shot behind Womble at 4-over and tied for 31st. Freshman Danny Guise had his best round of the tournament on Sunday as his he made four birdies in a round of even-par 72. Guise was tied for 43rd at 8-over par.
Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans carded rounds of 65-70-69 to claim medalist honors at 12-under par. He was five shots better than a pair of players.
Wake Forest will now wait its NCAA Regional fate as the announcement is set for 10 a.m. on Monday, May 5. The regional announcement will be aired live on The Golf Channel.
