By Gary Petit, Wake Forest Athletic Communications (@WakeMGolf)KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Wake Forest carded a final round 291 on Sunday at the Irish Creek Collegiate and finished in a tie for third at 19-over par. This was Wake's third top-5 finish of the spring.
The Demon Deacons got off to a great start and put themselves into contention on the final day for the third-straight tournament. Despite ultimately finishing third, head coach Jerry Haas was encouraged.
"We put ourselves right there again and soon enough, these third place finishes are going to turn into wins," Haas said. "The more you get into contention or under the gun, you find out how to handle yourself and find out what it takes to win. We needed to get off to a good start today and we did. I'm proud of the guys for that. I think we keep knocking at the door which is good to see this time of year."
Another encouraging site is the play of freshman Clancy Waugh. Rounds of 72-69-70 gave him a fifth place finish at 2-under par. That was his second top-5 finish of the season and it was also his second under-par 54-hole finish. Waugh made nine birdies and an eagle this weekend.
Senior Thomas Birdsey made six birdies in his final round 70 and finished in a tie for 17th at 4-over par. This was Birdsey's fourth under-par round in his last seven rounds.
Cyrus Stewart finished with a final round 74 and finished in a tie for 30th at 9-over. Stewart shot rounds of 72-76-74 on the weekend.
Sophomore Davis Womble and freshman Danny Guise each came in with rounds of 6-over 77 on Sunday. Womble was tied for 38th at 10-over while Guise was tied for 52nd at 12-over.
Individually, sophomore Andrew Winters carded rounds of 73-71-75 and finished in a tie for 21st at 6-over par. That was Winters' second-best finish to par this season.
Woody Woodward also played as an individual this weekend and posted rounds of 77-72-73 to finish tied for 30th.
Georgia State shot a final round 289, the lowest round of the day and would hold-off 36-hole co-leader North Florida by one shot. UNF's MJ McGuire followed his second round 64 with a 68 on Sunday to claim medalist honors at 8-under par.
The Demon Deacons have almost two weeks off before returning to action at the Woflpack Spring Open. The first two rounds are set for Saturday, April 19, at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, N.C.
