GREENSBORO, N.C. - Rising junior Romain Bogaerts has earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic Team for the first time in his career as announced by the conference office on Thursday morning.
The Huppaye, Belgium, native led the Demon Deacons with 26 singles victories in 2014 after transferring from Mississippi State. The sophomore was ranked No. 5 in the nation throughout the fall and reached No. 20 at two different points during the dual-match season in the spring.
Bogaerts anchored the No. 1 singles position for the vast majority of the season, playing there in 25 of his 26 appearances. In his lone match away from No. 1, he faced NC Central's Kyle Hairston in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Bogaerts earned 11 victories over ranked opponents across the fall and spring, highlighted by a straight-sets upset of then-No. 2 Guillermo Alcorta of Oklahoma on March 9.
The Belgian became Wake Forest's first representative since 2010 in the NCAA Singles Championship and the first since Todd Paul in 2006 to advance to the second round.
Much of that success carried over into doubles play for Bogaerts as well. The sophomore had a 17-10 overall record and was 14-8 when pairing with Maksim Kan, primarily in the No. 2 spot for the Demon Deacons. The duo defeated a pair of ranked opponents, including South Carolina's No. 26 duo of Chip Cox and Kyle Koch.
A Business major, Bogaerts is the first Demon Deacon to appear on the ACC All-Academic Team since Amogh Prabhakar in 2012. He is also just the sixth Wake Forest player to earn the honors. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
