CHARLESTON, S.C. - Wake Forest sophomore Sierra Sims fired a second-round 68 and leads the Cougar Classic by three shots at 11-under par.
As a team, the Demon Deacons carded their second-straight under-par round and are tied for second at 7-under par. Wake followed its opening round 282 with a round of 1-udner 287 on Monday. This was just the fourth time in school-history that the team carded back-to-back under-par rounds.
"The students are playing great right now and I'm really excited for them," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "Everyone is staying within themselves and not taking any risks. Just playing our game and I think that has allowed them to play with confidence. We haven't missed too many shots through the first two rounds. I think tomorrow is going to be fun. It feels great to be in the mix again."
Sims opened the tournament with a school-record tying 7-under 65 on Sunday and remained hot on Monday. She made a total of five birdies and just one bogey for a 4-under 68. Sims leads the field with 13 birdies through two rounds with eight of those birdies coming on the back nine. Both Sims' rounds of 65 and 68 are lower than any round she carded last season as a freshman.
Heading into the final round, Sims has a three-shot lead over NC State's Augusta James and UCLA's Bronte Law who are both 8-under par. Sims is trying to be the Deacons first individual winner since Cheyenne Woods won the ACC Championship in 2011. Another piece of history Sims will be chasing on Tuesday will be the 54-hole school-record of 10-under par which is held by Michelle Shin at the 2010 Mason Rudolph Championship.
Senior Allison Emrey countered three bogeys with three birdies and posted a second round of even-par 72. She is tied for ninth heading into the final round after opening the tournament with a career-low 69 on Sunday.
Marissa Dodd and Mariana Sims have each started the tournament with matching rounds of 2-over 74. Dodd shook-off a double-bogey midway through her round and made three birdies over her final eight holes. Mariana started her day with three-straight bogeys but fought back and played 1-under the rest of the day. Both players are tied for 42nd at 4-over par.
Freshman Erica Herr, who is making her collegiate debut this week, had a very solid round of 1-over 73 on Monday. She made a pair of birdies and has a total of three for the 36-holes.
Arkansas carded a round of 284 on Monday and holds a two shot lead over Wake Forest and UCLA at 9-under par. The Bruins opened with a round of 290 but fired a tournament round 279 in the second round to rocket up the leaderboard.
The final round is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday morning. The Deacons are paired with Arkansas, UCLA and NC State. Follow the final round on Golfstat.com.
