
Wake Forest Can't Overcome Slow Start at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Wake Forest couldn't overcome a slow start and lost at No. 25/24 Syracuse 73-62 on Thursday. Dearica Hamby led the way with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Hamby posted her ninth double-double of the season with 28 points and 11 rebounds. She went 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. Amber Campbell added 13 points and Milan Quinn scored eight points with five rebounds.
Wake Forest (9-9, 0-4) missed its first 10 field-goal attempts of the game, allowing Syracuse (12-5, 2-2) to open up a 15-3 lead through the first 10 minutes of play. Hamby put in a layup with 9:56 on the clock for the Demon Deacons first field goal of the night.
The Orange pushed the lead to 30-16 with 1:52 remaining in the opening period. Syracuse's 14-point lead was capped off by an Alexis Peterson three pointer. The Demon Deacons closed the half on a 6-0 run to close the lead to 32-24 at the break. Millesa Calicott drained two free throws and both Campbell and Hamby put in layups.
Wake Forest continued to cut in to the lead early in the second half. Quinn and Hamby scored the first two baskets of the half to make it a 32-28 Syracuse lead. Syracuse extended the lead back to 10 (38-28) on an Isabella Slim three-pointer.
Hamby scored six-straight points to get Wake Forest back within two, 59-57, with 3:31 to play. Peterson halted the run with her fourth three-pointer of the game to extend the Syracuse lead back to 62-57. The Orange were able to make free throws down the stretch and secure the 73-62 victory.
Wake Forest held Syracuse to 31.9 percent shooting from the floor and outscored the Orange 28-24 in the paint.
NOTES:
With a team-high 28 points, Dearica Hamby recorded her 10th 20-point game of the season.
Dearica Hamby moved in to third place on the Wake Forest all-time rebounds list. With 11 rebounds in the game she has 854 for her career and passed Secily Ray.
Dearica Hamby posted her ninth double-double of the season.
Amber Campbell scored in double figures for the 12th time this season.

Wake Forest returns home to host NC State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The game is the annual Pink Game. All fans that wear pink will be admitted free, and the first 500 fans will receive a pink rally towel.
NC State leads the series 64-13 and has won the last three meetings.
