Glenn Receives Gene Hooks Achievement Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Dr. Stephanie M. Glenn (’77, MD ’81), a former volleyball player at Wake Forest University, was honored with the Gene Hooks Achievement Award during the Varsity Club/Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday evening.
The award recognizes a former Wake Forest coach, staff member, student-athlete, trainer or manager who has exhibited traits of integrity, charity, leadership and embodies the Pro Humanitate spirit that Dr. Gene Hooks, former Director of Athletics, exhibited over his 45 years associated with Wake Forest University.
A four-year letter winner, Glenn was a hitter on the Wake Forest volleyball team. During her junior season in 1975, the Deacons enjoyed unprecedented success, advancing undefeated through regional play and defeating Duke to win the Small College State Championship. They went on to win the Region II title before competing in the national tournament, finishing their season with a 31-9 overall record.
During her senior year, Glenn served as captain of the team and was named Most Valuable Player. Despite having only one returning starter that year, Glenn led the team to a 20-13 record and to second place finishes in the state and regional tournaments before receiving an at-large bid to the national tournament.
Glenn was also a member of the women's basketball team in 1974 and 1975 before taking time to study abroad at Casa Artom, Wake Forest's house in Venice, Italy.
A Carswell Scholar and Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa honor student, Glenn majored in chemistry and went on to attend medical school at Wake Forest. She did her residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Family Medicine before working in the urgent care and family medicine departments at the Nalle Clinic.
Glenn has been an active member in Wake Forest’s Medical Alumni Association for many years, helping raise money for medical students' tuition. She established a medical scholarship in memory of a grandmother in the education field. This past year, Glenn helped fund a women's athletic scholarship in honor of the inspirational captain of the 1975 volleyball team, Gwen Williams Fletcher.
Following complications from a breast cancer recurrence, Glenn is now enjoying retirement. She enjoys travel and golf and spending time with family, friends and pets.
