LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Wake Forest freshman Will Zalatoris shot 67 (-4) in Monday's inaugural Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase, the low score of the 14 collegians in the field, earning the 18-year-old freshman an exemption into this week's Northern Trust Open at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In a first-of-its-kind event, top PGA TOUR pros played alongside 14 standout collegiate golfers from across the country and two amateurs, representing their respective universities. The professional and the two amateurs (not the collegian) teamed up in a best-ball competition and competed for the Collegiate Showcase Trophy and a donation of $50,000 to the university's golf program. That portion of the competition was won by Oregon.
Each collegian played his own ball. Zalatoris finished five strokes ahead of Arizona's George Cunningham (72) and was the only player to break par at The Riviera Country Club. He will be making his first start in a PGA TOUR event.
Zalatoris won his first college tournament at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, shooting 10-under par over two rounds and leading Wake Forest to a second-consecutive team tournament win. He finished 19th overall at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, shooting a 1-under 215 on the tournament and helping Wake Forest to a fourth-place team finish. As a four-year letterman at Trinity Christian in Plano, Texas, Zalatoris led the Trojans to the TAPPS State Championship in 2011 and 2013 and was the individual state champion in 2012 and 2013. He won the Champions Invitational by 11 shots with rounds of 67-66-75 and had a tremendous end to his junior career in 2014, carding a non-competitive round of 59. Zalatoris won the 2014 Texas State Amateur, the 2014 Trans-Miss Championship and the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He was co-medalist with Jordan Spieth at the 2011 Champions Invitational.
