WILMINGTON, N.C. - With the game tied 1-1 midway through the fourth, UNC-Wilmington scored nine consecutive runs over the next three innings to defeat Wake Forest 10-3 at Brooks Field on Wednesday evening.
After UNCW (3-0) got on the board first with a leadoff homer in the third, the Demon Deacons (2-2) evened the score in the next half inning. Justin Yurchak and Joey Rodriguez walked back-to-back, followed by an RBI single by Jonathan Pryor.
But the Seahawks exploded for 11 hits over the next three innings, putting nine runs on the board to take a commanding advantage.
Will Craig hit a two-run single in the ninth to cut into the UNCW margin.
Each team used a pitching rotation by committee, utilizing at least six pitchers apiece. Aaron Fossas started for Wake Forest and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings.
Donnie Sellers and Craig also recorded scoreless innings on the mound.
The Seahawks were led offensively by Corey Dick, Terence Connelly and Robbie Thorburn, as each chipped in three hits.
Cory Gantz (1-0) picked up the win for UNCW, while Garrett Kelly (0-2) took the loss for the Deacons.
MONDOU STILL STREAKING
Nate Mondou increased his hitting streak to eight games dating back to last season.
He was the only Deacon to post a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored.
FRESHMEN SUCCESS
Justin Yurchak kept his on-base percentage above .500, going 1-for-2 with a walk.
