WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Will Craig hit his first home run of the season, but Wake Forest fell to Appalachian State by a 10-1 score at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Wednesday evening.
Craig hit his ninth-career blast to snap Taylor Thurber's perfect game in the fifth inning, tying the score at 1-1.
The Mountaineers (3-3) scored nine unanswered runs off the Wake Forest bullpen to pull away.
Kevin Conway earned his first-career multi-hit game for the Demon Deacons (4-4), finishing 3-for-4 in his first start in center field.
Garrett Kelly started and allowed just one hit over 3.0 innings, striking out a pair of batters.
Donnie Sellers took the loss in relief, falling to 0-1. Thurber (1-0) earned the win for the Mountaineers.
App State utilized three home runs, including two from Jaylin Davis, to score nine runs over the final four innings.
With the Mountaineers leading 4-1 in the eighth, App State had a runner reach base on a dropped third strike, which would have been the third out of the inning.
They then hit a two-run single and two-run bomb to put the game out of reach.
Wake Forest looks to rebound this weekend with a tournament at home. The Demon Deacons play host to Towson on Friday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at noon, and Marshall on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
