HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Wake Forest got off to a hot start on the front nine in the final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate that propelled the Demon Deacons to a fifth place finish. Marissa Dodd placed in the top 10 for the second time this season.
Dodd fired a 1-under 70 to finish in a tie for 10th at five-over par. That is her second top-10 finish of the season. Dodd had three birdies on the front nine, including the first two holes of the day.
As a team, Wake Forest rebounded from an opening round 303 with rounds of 293 on Saturday and 294 on Sunday to finish tied for fifth with No. 2-ranked South Carolina. This marks the highest finish for the Demon Deacons at the event, besting last year's sixth place finish.
"I am proud of the way the students fought back this weekend," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "This will give us confidence and momentum as we head in to the final weeks of the regular season."
Sierra Sims and Allison Emrey both finished in the top 20 individually. Sierra Sims carded a 1-over 72 to finish with a 221 for the weekend. After an opening-round 77 she fired back-to-back rounds of 72 and tied for 16th with three other golfers. Sims moved up 13 spots on the individual leaderboard on the final day. Emrey wrapped up the weekend with a 1-over 75 to finish 20th in the event.
Vinh-Hop Ngo and Mariana Sims shot matching rounds of 77 on Sunday. Ngo was 17-over for the tournament and tied for 58th. Mariana Sims rounded out the Deacon five in a tied for 75th.
Wake Forest has two springs tournaments left before the ACC Championships. The Demon Deacons head to LSU for the LSU Invitational March 27-29.
