WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Stuart Fairchild posted Wake Forest's first five-hit game since 2009, but the Demon Deacons fell to Notre Dame, 9-5, at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday night.

Wake Forest (23-20, 9-13 ACC) out-hit the Fighting Irish (28-13, 12-10 ACC), 14-9, but timely hits and free bases were the difference for Notre Dame.

Fairchild became the first Deacon to tally five hits since Mike Murray did so at Virginia Tech on April 4, 2009. He tallied doubles in his first two at bats and singles in his final three, finishing 5-for-5.

Nate Mondou and Will Craig each had a pair of hits. Mondou drilled his 10th longball of the season and added a double, while Craig doubled and hit a two-run single.

The Irish took advantage of five walks, two hit by pitches and an error to go along with three solo homers, one apiece from Cavan Biggio, Kyle Fiala and Lane Richards, to top Wake Forest. They were led by Robert Youngdahl, who went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 4-0 lead before a Gavin Sheets RBI single cut the margin to 4-1 in the fourth.

A Youngdahl RBI double in the fifth and Richards solo blast in the eighth put the Irish in front, 6-1.

Mondou drilled the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth inning over the right-field wall. Sheets added an RBI fielder's choice, but Wake Forest left the bases loaded with a 6-3 score.

After Wake Forest retired the first two batters of the ninth, a solo homer, walk, single and two-run double pushed the margin to 9-3.

Mondou doubled and Craig hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning, but the Deacons stranded two more on a game-ending foulout.

Wake Forest left 10 runners on base, compared to six for Notre Dame. Two of the five Irish walked came around to score, and the one Wake Forest error turned into two Notre Dame runs.

Scott Kerrigan (2-4) picked up the win in relief for Notre Dame, while Matt Pirro (6-3) suffered the defeat for Wake Forest.

The teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 4 p.m. on ESPN3.
