SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Wake Forest women's golf is in second place at the NCAA Notre Dame Regional after an opening round 293. Seniors Marissa Dodd and Allison Emrey are both in the top five with rounds under par.

As a team the Demon Deacons fired a 293. It is the lowest NCAA Regional opening round for Wake Forest since the 2007 East Regional. That year Wake Forest opened with a 284 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. and finished third to advance to the NCAA Championship.

Wake Forest, ranked No. 13 entering the regional, is in second place behind ACC rival Duke. The Blue Devils have a five-stroke lead after an opening round even par 288. Top-seeded Arizona finished the day in third place, one stroke back of Wake Forest. UC Davis is in fourth place at 7-over while Kent State and Oklahoma State are tied for fifth at 8-over. The top six teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.

"The team got off to a good start today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "Marissa was steady all day and Allison came back from 3-over. Sierra Sims was solid in her play and Erica Herr and Mariana Sims hit a lot of good shots but got a few unlucky breaks. I was proud of the way the team hung in there because it was a very long and slow day. Their effort and focus was excellent and we need to continue to stay with that the rest of the way."

Dodd played a bogey-free front nine with birdies on holes two and three to make the turn at 2-under. The senior moved back to even par after bogeys on 11 and 12 but finished the round strong with birdies on 15 and 16. She finished the opening round with a 2-under 70 and is tied for second in the individual standings.

Emrey used an impressive finish to crack the top five on Thursday. The senior was 3-over after 11 holes before she birdied four of the final seven holes, including the last two to drop to 1-under for the round. She is tied for fifth with a 71.

Sierra Sims was 2-over at the turn and was even par on every hole coming home to card a 2-over 74 on Thursday. The sophomore is tied for 25th with two rounds remaining.

Freshman Erica Herr carded nines of 40-38 for a first-round 78. She is in a tie for 61st headed into Friday. Mariana Sims rounded out the Deacon-five with a round of 79.

Duke's Celine Boutier is the individual leader at 5-under after the opening round.

Wake Forest will be paired with No. 4 Arizona and No. 5 Duke for Friday's second round. The groups will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:30 a.m.
