WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's tennis recruit Emma Davis made a splash earlier this week by winning the New England US Open National Playoff Sectional Qualifying event held at Yale University Tennis Center in convincing fashion.
Davis, the No. 1-seed in the tournament, never dropped more than two games in a set throughout her dominating weekend June 11-15. After receiving a bye into the second round top open the tournament, Davis topped Patricia Kusmierski 6-0, 6-0 before topping UMass rising junior Brittany Collens 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Davis rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Canadian Anne-Sophie Courteau before topping Carol Finke, a rising sophomore at Yale and the No. 2-seed in the tournament, by the score of 6-1, 6-1 for the title.
With the tournament victory, Davis moves on to the US Open National Playoff Championship in New Haven, Connecticut, beginning August 21. The winner of the singles championship in August will receive a wild card entry to compete in the US Open Qualifying Tournament.
Davis is a five-star recruit coming to Wake Forest from Cohasset high School in Cohasset, Massachusetts. Currently, Davis ranks No. 48 in her class while ranking No. 1 in the state of Massachusetts and No. 3 in the New England region. Overall, Davis has posted a season-best mark of No. 35 in the country. In each of her previous seasons, Davis has reached the top 20 nationally, topping out at No. 14 in the country in 2013.
Joanna Zalewski, another incoming freshman for the Demon Deacons this fall, also competed in a US Open National Playoff Sectional Qualifying event last week in Flushing, New York. Zalewski, the No. 4-seed in the tournament, reached the semifinals before falling 6-1, 7-6 (7) to Virginia's Julia Elbaba, the No. 1-seed in the tournament.
