WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In the final ITA Division I rankings released Wednesday afternoon, Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest women's tennis finished the year ranked No. 118 in the country while checking in at No. 12 in the Carolina Region. Additionally, Wake Forest as a team finished fifth in the Carolina Region. On the doubles circuit, Guerin and Kasey Gardiner finished the season ranked No. 10 in the region.
With the two rankings in singles and doubles, Wake Forest improved from last season when it didn't have a singles player or doubles duo ranked regionally or nationally. In finishing fifth in the region this season, the Demon Deacons improved from a sixth-place finish last year.
Guerin had a breakout season this year as a sophomore, posting team-high with 23 singles wins and 21 doubles victories. With an overall singles mark of 23-14, she improved drastically from her final record of 15-20 a season ago as a freshman. A third team All-ACC honoree, Guerin went 15-10 from the No. 1 singles spot throughout the 2014-15 campaign while posting the only three victories for the Deacs over ranked opponents this season. In comparison, Guerin's 15-20 record during the 2013-14 season included a 2-13 mark at No. 2 singles with just one win over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Closing the season paired with Gardiner, the two posted an impressive 7-1 mark together, which included an excellent 3-1 mark at No. 1 doubles. The two closed the season on a five-match winning streak that they'll look to continue together in the fall. Overall in doubles, Guerin's 21-9 record included an immaculate 15-4 mark in dual-match play. Throughout the season, she posted an 11-3 record at No. 2 doubles before moving up to finish the season with Gardiner at No. 1 doubles.
Wake Forest as a team this year finished 14-13 with a 4-10 mark in conference play. In finishing with a mark over .500, it marks the first time the program accomplished the feat since the 2007 season when the Deacs went 15-8 with a 7-4 mark in conference play. The four conference victories are the most in the Jeff Wyshner era, which dates back to the 2011 season. Starting the season ranked No. 60 in the country, the Deacs posted back-to-back home conference victories on April 11 and 12 for the first time since the 2009 season when Wake Forest pulled out three 6-1 victories in a row at home against NC State, Maryland and Boston College.
